Progress in International Support for the Chagossian Right of Return

The Government of the Chagos Islands has welcomed growing international support for the right of the Chagossian people to return to their homeland. Diplomatic discussions and legal developments in recent years have strengthened recognition of the community’s long-standing claim to resettle the islands from which they were displaced.

Representatives of the Chagossian community have continued to engage with international partners, legal experts, and policymakers to promote a peaceful and sustainable path toward resettlement. Advocacy groups have emphasized the cultural, historical, and humanitarian importance of restoring the community’s connection to the islands.

The Government has reiterated that any future governance framework must include the participation and consent of the Chagossian people themselves. Planning initiatives are underway to explore sustainable infrastructure, environmental protection, and economic opportunities that could support a future civilian population across parts of the archipelago.

Officials stated that restoring the right of return would represent a significant step toward justice and reconciliation for a community that has spent generations in exile.
